Democrats introduce S.R. 1 – which Republicans slammed as the “Corrupt Politicians Act” – in the Senate as their top legislation priority.
Republicans argue the bill will rig elections by opening voting up to massive fraud and make it so the GOP can never win an election again.
The bill calls for eliminating enforcement of voter
ID laws, mandatory voter registration, universal mail-in voting, as well as universal ballot harvesting.
But there is one catch.
Democrats need all 50 of their Senators to unite to nuke the filibuster in order to pass this bill on a party line vote since Republicans are 100 percent in lockstep opposition to this bill.
The final dagger in the heart of this bill came when West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin came out in support of another piece of legislation Democrats hope to use to rig election.
“I believe Democrats and Republicans feel very strongly about protecting the ballot boxes allowing people to protect the right to vote making it accessible making it fair and making it secure and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, if we apply that to all 50 states and territories, it’s something that can be done – it should be done,” Manchin told ABC. “It could be done bipartisan to start getting confidence back in our system.”
By coming out for an alternative bill, Manchin crushed any hopes of getting 50 votes for S.R. 1.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Act – named for the late left-wing Congressman for Georgia – would reinstate a section of the Voting Rights Act struck down by the Supreme Court, which forced mostly Republican states in the south to get Justice Department approval before passing election integrity measures.
But Manchin even doomed this bill by saying he would not support a one-time change to the filibuster to support any voting bills.
“If you do it for one time you basically destroy the Senate as we know it,” Manchin added.
Democrats hoped to pass these bills before the 2022 midterms to tilt the playing field in their favor.
Now they are left with no path forward.
