With the  gold standard , countries agreed to convert paper money into a fixed amount of gold. A country that uses the gold standard sets a fixed price for gold and buys and sells gold at that price. That fixed price is used to determine the value of the currency. For example, if the U.S. sets the  price of gold  at $500 an ounce, the value of the dollar would be 1/500th of an ounce of gold.

I've recently ventured into retro-gaming and rigged my Nvidia Shield TV Android device with some game emulators using RetroArch ... notably the Nintendo N64, Super Nintendo, Nintendo NES, PlayStation 1, Sega Mega Drive and various arcade games; and what game emulator setup would be complete without Super Mario 3??? Below is a bit of some behind the scenes history, followed by a play-through video of one of the most successful video game titles ever created. An honorable mention goes out to Super Tux. Super Tux is a very exceptional clone of Super Mario 3 employing the character "Tux" (mascot of Linux) as the protagonist in the story.  Functionally, it's on par with SM3 and also has some very clever theme music interwoven though the different levels. Some years ago I read the book Attack on the Liberty by James Ennes, an officer of the USS Liberty , a vessel which was attacked by the Israelis 53 years ago on June 8, 1967 and who was aboard during the attack that resulted in the deaths of 34 U.S. service members and the wounding of many others; according to him and every other member of the crew that survived, there was no way the Israelis could have mistaken their ship for an Egyptian destroyer or freighter as the Israelis claimed. The ship does not resemble a destroyer or any other type of warship in any way, and besides a couple of .50 caliber machine guns, it carried no other weapons. Although it was once a cargo ship and could have easily been mistaken for one, the array of antennas alone strongly suggested it was an intelligence-gathering vessel, which indeed it was. A walk around and instructional video on the B-24 Liberator, also known among USAAF personnel as the "Flying Coffin", as the aircraft was considered difficult to fly and had cumbersome and heavy controls. Other than that it did one hell of a job in WWII, with over 18,000 units produced. It had two bomb bays, and was armed with ten M-2 .50 caliber machine guns in various configurations.
