One of the more memorable gaffes to come out of the 2012 election was when Barack Obama said, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.”
While Obama may be gone, his former Vice President is now running the country and is unfortunately carrying on Obama’s anti-business sentiment.
And you’ll never believe Biden’s plan to beat Big Meat.
During a recent meeting, Biden said, “Too often, they [big meat processors] use their power to squeeze out smaller competitors and stifle new entrepreneurs, making our economy less dynamic and giving themselves free rein to raise prices, reduce options for consumers, or exploit workers. The meat industry is a textbook example on the price side.”
However, instead of getting the government out of the way and repealing burdensome regulations that hurt small farmers, Biden and the Democrats are trying to sue away the problem.
Specifically, the Biden-Harris Administration is planning on “beefing” up the government’s use of the Packers and Stockyards Act of 1921, the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, and the Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914 to “promote competition.”
During a recent press conference, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki blamed the rise in meat prices on corporate greed.
Psaki said, “You could call it corporate greed, sure . . . You could call it jacking up prices during a pandemic.”
Although industry experts and conservatives disagree with the White House’s diagnosis and policy prescriptions to bring down meat prices.
Julie Potts, CEO of the North American Meat Institute, responded to these attacks from the White House by saying, “The Biden Administration continues to ignore the number one challenge to meat and poultry production: labor shortages . . . This tired approach is not surprising because they have refused to engage with the packing and processing sector they attack, going so far as to hold a roundtable on meat packing without a single beef or pork packer present.”
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s chief policy officer Neil Bradley argued that labor and energy costs are the real culprits behind meat’s price increases and rightly warns that further government interference will only lead to even higher prices.
What’s even more frustrating is that the White House and Congress continue to ignore Congressman Thomas Massie’s PRIME Act, despite the fact the bill has bipartisan support and provides commonsense, free market solutions that will actually help bring down prices.
Perhaps it’s the President’s government-first approach to “solving” the nation’s problems or his obsession with becoming the next F.D.R. that have caused him to ignore Congressman Massie’s bill.
Or, even more likely, given Biden’s failing mental health, he may not even know of its existence.
What’s truly fascinating and infuriating about Biden’s beef with Big Meat is that he apparently wasn’t aware of the rise of meat prices until he went home to Delaware to celebrate the holidays.
Biden recounted, “I was sitting in my kitchen yesterday and here’s a sunroom off the kitchen and my wife was there with her sister and a good friend named Mary Ann . . . and she was saying, ‘Do you realize it’s over $5 for a pound of hamburger meat? $5?’”
Perhaps the President’s newfound fascination with Big Meat will lead him to embracing Rep. Massie’s pro-market PRIME Act.
While such an outcome is highly unlikely, with meat prices this high, perhaps pigs may fly.
