Ethical concerns grow over business activities of Kamala Harris’ niece Meena Harris

“Ethical headache”

A report from Politico characterized Harris’ relative, 36-year-old niece Meena Harris, as being a potential “ethical headache.”

The report noted that Meena Harris is the New York Times bestselling author of Ambitious Girl, and has also penned Kamala and Maya’s Big Idea, which reached number one The Times‘ bestseller list.

Those ventures are in addition to Meena’s Phenomenal clothing line, her production company, as well as her career as a paid public speaker.

Possible impropriety

Yet there are concerns that Harris’ money-making endeavors could cross a line if they leverage and directly profit off her relationship with her aunt.

Politico stated that the book Kamala and Maya’s Big Idea “doesn’t violate the White House’s policies because she published it before Kamala became vice president.” However, the website noted that it is “not clear if Meena continuing to accept royalties on the book is permitted” and that she has refused to say whether she is still accepting royalties.

According to Politico, when Meena traveled to the inauguration, she flew on a private plane owned by a donor to Biden’s inaugural committee.

The Biden administration appears eager to distance itself from any appearance of impropriety. “The Vice President and her family will uphold the highest ethical standards and it’s the White House’s policy that the Vice President’s name should not be used in connection with any commercial activities that could reasonably be understood to imply an endorsement or support,” Sabrina Singh, a spokesperson for the vice president, said in a statement.


Biden’s younger brother

Concerns over Meena Harris come amid new revelations about the president’s alleged warning to his younger brother, Frank Biden.

According to Politico, Biden at one point told his sibling to “watch yourself,” adding, “Don’t get sucked into something that would, first of all, hurt you.”

That conversation is said to have been prompted by concerns over Frank Biden’s use of the Biden family name to promote Berman Law Group, a legal firm that employs him as a non-attorney.
