Robocop Reality

Image
I was waiting at one of my favorite sleazy food joints when I saw an unattended police car. Walking around it, I marveled at what it had on both the interior and exterior. From the outside, it looked more like a hostile deep-space probe than a vehicle designed with terrestrial public safety in mind. It bristled with antennae and bump-like fairings that you normally see on military aircraft. If it had wings, it’s a safe bet some sort of weaponry and/or surveillance device would be attached to them. Its orca-like paint job enhanced its already menacing appearance. From this... As a form of sick and ironic comic relief, there's the lights. Evidently, the same people who usually design things normally found on the Las Vegas Strip diverted their talents to law enforcement vehicles. Either way, it’s big fucking money. Unlike hitting a jackpot in Vegas, when all of the flashing multicolored lights and sirens literally scream out Win, Win, Win, when those lights and sounds ema...

The Floyd case through color blind lenses: Guest post by TJ Darby

Image
These are indeed troubled times in which we live.  Regardless of which side of the political divide one finds themselves this is a statement upon which we may find a consensus.  Depending upon which side of that divide one may find themselves this conclusion is reached for differing reasons.  Under current circumstances it would be to the benefit of all concerned if we were to unite upon those reasons which we find in common.  There is no doubt that such commonality exists, yet still it seems to elude us. That leaves us with this question: why? The images of Mr. Floyd are disturbing. They are disturbing not because they show a white cop shoving the face of a black man into the pavement. They are disturbing because this image is emblematic of the state of affairs nationwide.  What I see is an American citizen being crushed beneath the boot of unrestrained and thuggish application of police powers.  The motto of “protect and serve” has long ...

We Reserve the Right

Image
Of all the signs one faces and occasionally reads whenever they enter a business, the ones that say things like "We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to Anyone" and "No Loitering" are usually among them. They are also among the things that seem to be falling victim to that hideous disease known as political correctness. Call me old fashioned, but if someone is acting like an obnoxious asshole, they are usually asked to leave. If they walk into a place and occupy space without ordering anything, they are usually asked to leave. If they smell so fucking bad that vultures are circling overhead, they are usually asked to leave. Not any more. Unless you’re a straight white male, especially one wearing a MAGA hat or anything and everything even remotely resembling one, the world is now both your oyster and your toilet. As long as you’re not an ESWM (Evil Straight White Male, as if there are any other kind), laws and customs in place for hundreds, if not...

Beware of the Rainbow Scare and Other Random Musings

Image
It's been said that the USA is "the land of the free and the home of the brave" and a country where you have numerous freedoms that are conducive to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Very good, but why is it that I’m constantly surrounded by people who are trying to tell me what to say and what to do? It’s increasingly becoming the land of the cowed and home of the paranoid who seem to be content with death, despair, and the pursuit of medication. The 50's were a time of the Red Scare, and one had to be very careful what they said and did, or even the mere appearance of it lest they be tagged a communist. James Thurber wrote a good one on that topic: The Very Proper Gander Not so very long ago there was a very fine gander. He was strong and smooth and beautiful and he spent most of his time singing to his wife and children. One day somebody who saw him strutting up and down in his yard and singing remarked, "There is a ve...
